A new museum
Bernard Fibicher, MCBA director
In brief
The MCBA has left the Palais de Rumine and moved to the PLATFORM 10 site, near Lausanne station, and a made-to-measure building.
Things were cramped in the old MCBA quarters, but the architects of EBV – Estudio Barozzi/Veiga – have come up with a building perfectly adapted to the expectations of today’s museum-goers and providing optimal conservation conditions for the artworks. With its exhibition space almost tripled, MCBA can at last offer local, national and international visitors a permanent presentation of its collection, in addition to temporary exhibitions.
A remarkable site right in the city
A stone’s throw from Lausanne station, the future museum remains in the heart of the city, complete with access via public transport and regional and international connections. The site is destined to become a focal point for cultural life in Lausanne. The PLATFORM 10 project will ultimately host three museums: firstly MCBA, followed by the Musée de l’Elysée (the canton’s photography museum) and mudac (the Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts), both scheduled for completion by 2021.
New visitor services
The new building is also designed to offer MCBA visitors facilities including a restaurant, a bookshop/store, an auditorium and a library. The design involves the opening-up of a new public space, creating fresh urban perspectives and a user-friendly arts neighbourhood with free access for all.

Moving
The team is setting about combining all the main functions – acquisition, conservation, presentation and visitor services – with the marvellous potential provided by made-to-measure premises and a truly remarkable site.
PLATEFORME 10
A new city district
Fine art, photography, design, textile arts: by their very nature, these artistic fields have reason to enter into dialogue. The union of MCBA, the Musée de l’Elysée and the mudac, complemented by the presence of the Toms Pauli and Félix Vallotton Foundations, will form PLATEFORME 10, a new “arts district” next to the Lausanne train station. It is a genuine cultural platform that aims to overstep the natural barriers of each of the institutions on site, in order to give the place an energy and a competitiveness that are highly attractive.
